Love Townes! I've been a Townes Van Zandt admirer for over 20 years now and I've lost more cassettes and cd's of him than I care to remember.

Whatever the case, these two discs contain some inspired performances, highlighting the warmth, humor, and tenderness of his songs. I bought the CD of this concert, not the vinyl, so regarding the recording quality I can only speak to the CD. The 180 g weight definitely makes them feel like pre-1970s records.

On this live recording, however, Townes and his songs really shine. Dumb People Town is the live version of the hit podcast of the same name. I hadn't heard of Townes Van Zandt until I watched the "Austin" episode of the Foo Fighters show series Sonic Highways. On this live recording, however, Townes and his songs really shine. The liner notes describe the recording as the "Rosetta Stone" of Texas music. 2001 live album by Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt & Guy Clark. Maybe it's the fact that more of his personality shines through in a club show setting, and also he is playing to a small audience of devotees. In July 1973, Van Zandt performed a string of shows over five sweltering nights at the Old Quarter bar owned by Rex ("Wrecks") Bell and Dale Soffar that were recorded on a portable four-track by Earl Willis, the album's producer and engineer. You can hear the room reacting, the crowd clapping or laughing, glasses clinking, not in an annoying way. I was never that fond of his voice, but he was obviously a great songwriter, so I always keep listening, hoping that something would click.

This is the Place to Start If You Are Just Entering the Parched, Spare Domain of Townes Van Zandt.

Just buy this. An extraordinary album that absolutely sears itself into your soul on every playing. When the live album finally came out it received euphoric praise from critics, who had bemoaned the overproduction on some of his earlier records. Nowhere Comedy Club is providing a service via the use of Zoom’s platform, a platform we do not own or control.

Van Zandt is introduced by Dale Soffar and, after apologizing for the busted air conditioning, performs a gentle reading of "Pancho and Lefty", describing how he wrote the song while traveling near Dallas with Daniel Antopolsky. An extraordinary album that absolutely sears itself into your soul on every playing.

Townes is in great form and unusually the recording seems to have captured the atmosphere of the moment.

There really isn't much background noise left on either disc--it seems like a pretty clean master, actually, and its dynamic range is good, too.

As legendary as it's reputation, Live at The Old Quarter, a small juke joint measuring only 18x38, over a hundred people were jammed in this smokey barroom back in 1973 to listen to the unique songs of Townes Van Zandt, the man and his guitar, imagine a hundred people packed in this room, passing beer mugs and sawbucks back and forth to the bar, standing on each others' shoulders, I remember playing gigs like that... the songs of Townes Van Zandt, the words are intelligent, mesmerizing, and most of all realistic... these recordings are almost hypnotic or desolate, similar to the atmosphere of John Prine's debut album, Van Zandt literally takes total control here captivating this audience with his songs, "Poncho And Lefty", "If I Needed You", "Tecumseh Valley", "No Place To Fall", "To Live Is To Fly", "Two Girls", "For The Sake Of The Song", "White Freightliner Blues", also some fine covers on here, "Who Do You Love", "Nine Pound Hammer", "Cocaine Blues", another Townes' song that really catches my ear, Flyin' Shoes, is featured on the live release "Rear View Mirror"... really, this recording doesn't need a review, the songs of Townes Van Zandt speak for themselves, the closest thing to being there... if you like acoustic, a touch of the blues and folk, don't miss this one.
